Egyptian Defense Minister Calls for United Efforts to Defeat Terrorism
CAIRO (Sputnik) — The Egyptian Armed Forces in cooperation with police killed 65 terrorists in the north of the country's eastern Sinai peninsula, the Egyptian Defense Ministry said in a statement Friday.

"The Armed Forces, with the use of the aviation, and civilian police targeted a number of terrorist shelters and weapons, ammunition and fuel depots in the vicinity of the cities of Rafah and Sheikh Zuwaid. [During the operation] 65 members of a terrorist group were killed," the statement says.

It was added in the statement that the Egyptian Air Force had also been involved in the operation in the country's western regions that resulted in the destruction of 12 vehicles used for smuggling across the Egyptian-Libyan border.

Cairo has been fighting an Islamist insurgency in Sinai since the army, led by President Abdel Fattah Sisi, overthrew then President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
