CAIRO (Sputnik) — The Yemeni army is fully ready to commence an assault on the country's capital Sanaa should Houthi rebels fail to leave the city, the Yemeni armed forces spokesman said Friday.

"The Army is fully prepared to storm the capital if Houthi and [former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah] Saleh's accomplices fail to withdraw its forces from [Sanaa]," Brig. Gen. Samir Haj told RIA Novosti in an interview.

According to Haj, forces loyal to President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi are approaching the capital.

Yemen has been engulfed in a military conflict between the government forces and Houthi rebels, who have been supported by army units loyal to Saleh.

Since March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes against Houthi positions at Hadi's request.
