Investigation into the oil industry of the Islamic State militant group, carried out by journalists of the RT television channel, proves Turkey’s financial ties with extremists, a spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry said Thursday.

MOSCOW, March 24 (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, the website of the RT television channel published documents of the Islamic State (IS) militant group and testaments of captured fighters, detailing information on the extremists’ oil industry and exports of crude to Turkey. According to one of the captive Islamists, the oil which Daesh produces is sold to Turkey in amounts so great that it is impossible that the Turkish authorities are unaware of this, with Ankara sending funds, arms and food to Syria.

"Indubitably, we could not help but notice the journalist RT's investigation. The results of this work convincingly prove Ankara’s involvement in financing and preparing international terrorists acting in the Syrian territory," Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov told journalists.

Daesh controls large areas in Syria and Iraq. The terrorist group, which is banned in Russia, relies heavily on revenues derived from the black-market sale of drugs, smuggled crude oil and human trafficking.

In December 2015, the Russian Defense Ministry released satellite images showing oil allegedly being trucked from Islamic State facilities in Syria to Turkey.

Moscow also contends that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his family are directly involved in illicit oil activities with the Islamic State, which is also known as Daesh.
