Israeli troops sealed off the border with the Palestinian territories until Saturday night for the duration of the Jewish holiday of Purim, the Israeli army’s press service said Wednesday.

TEL AVIV (Sputnik) — According to the spokesperson, no additional restrictions have been introduced within the West Bank territories. The army will only make exceptions for emergency humanitarian situations, the spokesperson added.

"According to the government's decision and on the basis of operational situation assessments, all the border crossings that connect Israel with the West Bank, will be closed for entry to Palestinians until Saturday midnight," an army spokesperson told RIA Novosti.

The move to close the border with the West Bank is not unprecedented. Previously, the Israeli army sealed the border for the holidays of Yom Kippur and Passover.

The decades-long territorial conflict between the Palestinians and Israelis has recently seen increased tensions. Some 30 Israelis and several foreigners have been killed in knife, gun or vehicle attacks, believed to be carried out mostly by Palestinian youths, since September 2015. About 185 Palestinians have died by Israeli fire during the same period.
