GENEVA (Sputnik), Svetlana Alexandrova — The US representative to the UN Human Rights Council, Keith Harper, praised the ongoing ceasefire in Syria, in a comment to Sputnik on Friday.
"It is a difficult process but we are happy where it is now. It is always going to be challenging," Harper said at a side event of the UN Human Rights Council's 31st session in Geneva.
The US ambassador attended a panel discussion by Nobel Peace Prize recipients on the subject of human rights in the war-torn country.
Last month, Russia and the United States brokered a truce between the Syrian government and key opposition forces in Syria.
The ceasefire took effect on February 27 and has largely held so far, despite sporadic violations. It does not apply to terrorist groups operating in the country, mainly Daesh and the Nusra Front.
