CAIRO (Sputnik) Egypt is monitoring the course of the cessation of hostilities that entered into force in Syria this weekend and hopes the sides uphold their commitments, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry’s official spokesman told Sputnik on Sunday.

“Egypt is observing with interest the progress of the truce in Syria, and we hope that all parties will abide by it,” Ahmed Abu Zeid said.

He reaffirmed the ceasefire’s importance in facilitating humanitarian access and “improving the climate” for negotiations and political efforts to settle the crisis.

Zeid further denied reports that preparations were underway for an extended Syrian opposition meeting in Cairo.
