The Kurdish security council said in a statement that the Kurdish special forces have rescued a Swedish teen from Daesh militant group in Iraq.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Kurdish special forces have rescued a Swedish teen from Daesh militant group in Iraq, the Kurdish security council said in a statement.

"The Kurdistan Region Security Council was called upon by Swedish authorities and members of her family to assist in locating and rescuing her from ISIL [Daesh]," the statement Tuesday statement said, as quoted by the Sky News television channel.

According to the media outlet, the girl, 16, travelled to Syria last year and crossed into Iraq after having been "misled" by an Daesh member in Sweden.

She was rescued on February 17 in Daesh ISIL stronghold of Mosul. The teen is currently in Iraqi Kurdistan and will be handed over to the Swedish authorities.

The Islamic State, also known as Daesh, is a designated terrorist group that is outlawed in the United States, Russia and many other countries. The terror group has occupied large swaths of land in Syria and Iraq, where it proclaimed a caliphate.

The number of foreigners fighting for Daesh has more than doubled in a year and a half to more than 30,000, according to the New York-based security intelligence firm Soufan Group.
