The UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has commenced in Syria its second straight week of humanitarian aid to the Damascus district of Yalda, distributing thermal blankets in Yarmouk, Yalda, Babila and Beit Saham.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — According to the spokesman, approximately 2,000 families have already received a total of 4,060 blankets, while the agency expects to serve 5,700 families in total.

"UNRWA commenced its second consecutive week of humanitarian operations in the Damascus district of Yalda today, Sunday, 21 February. We distributed thermal blankets to Palestine refugees and other civilians from Yarmouk, Yalda, Babila and Beit Saham, who had previously reported that blankets were a critical need due to low winter temperatures," UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness said in a statement on Sunday.

Since an armed conflict broke out in Syria in 2011, the Yarmouk refugee camp for Palestinian and Syrian refugees has been regularly taken over by different militant groups, which has led to its isolation and catastrophic humanitarian conditions for the refugees.

Major powers of the International Syria Support Group agreed on February 11 to speed up humanitarian access to besieged areas across Syria.
