Number of Civilian Casualties in Afghanistan Conflict 'Hits Record' in 2015

A total of 11,002 civilian casualties, including 3,545 deaths and 7,457 injured, were recorded in Afghanistan conflict in 2015, exceeding 2014 record levels, the UN report revealed Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the 2015 Annual Report on Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict produced by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), ground fighting in populated areas, suicide bombing and other attacks were the main causes of civilian deaths and injuries in the country in 2015.

The highest number of civilian casualties was caused by the ground fighting, while anti-government forces caused the most part of the casualties, 62 percent, the report said.

The number of women casualties increased by 37 percent in 2015 comparing to 2014, and number of child deaths and injuries increased by 14 percent, amounting to 25 percent of all civilian casualties in 2015, according to UNAMA.

The mission has been recording civilian deaths and injuries in the Afghan conflict since 2009.
