The United States welcomes Saudi Arabia’s willingness to send ground forces into Syria to fight the Daesh jihadist group, US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) On Thursday, the Saudi embassy in Washington said in a Twitter message that the Saudi Ministry of Defense stood ready to deploy ground troops to Syria to aid in the US-led international anti-Daesh coalition efforts.

“That kind of news is very welcome.  I look forward to discussing that with the Saudi defense minister [Mohammad bin Salman] next week — that and other kinds of contributions that Saudi Arabia can make,” Carter said, as quoted in a press statement.

According to Carter, the coalition’s representatives are due to discuss the issue in Brussels next week.

“So the reason why I'm going to Brussels next week is to bring the full weight of the coalition behind accelerating the defeat of Daesh,” the defense secretary added.

Riyadh has been a nominal member of the US-led coalition that has been launching airstrikes against Daesh in Syria since September 2014, without the permission of Damascus or the United Nations. In December 2015, Saudi Arabia started its own Muslim 34-nation coalition to fight Islamic extremism.

Daesh is a Sunni group, outlawed in a number of countries, including the United States and Russia.

So who exactly is making US foreign policy?

JPH, Carter is. under orders from Cheney.

asimpleguest, how can it be stopped. The U.N. is an organization that is designed to hear the petitions of individuals over states. But it has not been used in that capacity. Perhaps there needs to be a better strategy to countering injustice that is grassroots and works through available infrastructual avenues.....

Saudi's and US are crime organizations and should be "STOPPED BY THE UN" now !!!!!
    • Linda
Now. This could be the beginning of WW3, and of course the criminal sydicate of US - Nato approve of this although its against international law.
Is this the beginning of Armageddon?

Without approval of the Assad and the UN government that would be an Invasion.
Carter should know that and it will not make him more friends in Europe.

That would be a wet dream of the old man McCain if Turkey and Saudi troops start a war in Syria against Assad's troops and Russian air support. Any "proxy war" (Stellvertreterkrieg) against Russia would get approval of McCain and maybe even Obama's Carter?

      Linda, no.

cmat.wolfgang, they all know it. Get over it. It is pointless to argue this point. UN isn't doing anything. The ball is solely in the Russian court. If the Russians say that they will fight it the invasion won't happen. If they continue being quiet about it this is where Syria is cut up.
    • vendorin reply towilliamsxenia7(Show commentHide comment)
      williamsxenia7, correct.

UN has to take that seriously! Some US war mongers maybe not. But such steps must always be taken. At least for the history writers.
    • vendorin reply tocmat.wolfgang(Show commentHide comment)
cmat.wolfgang, I know and you are right but it isn't happening not because we are both against it but because UN is controlled by someone else rather than the two of us. UN will have to do something only if Russia and China step up. The ball is in Russia's yard.
    • cmat.wolfgangin reply tovendor(Show commentHide comment)
I'm sorry if I do not agree with you completely (most of the time I am). UI think that such steps are necessary even for an active role of the Russians.
    • vendorin reply tocmat.wolfgang(Show commentHide comment)
cmat.wolfgang, think about it like this. If the invasion is to happen in a week or a month do you think Russia has enough time to set up a meeting at UN to deliberate over a new strategy and who should or should not do certain stuff? It may take months to agree on anything. A UN resolution can not be agreed upon in 2 hours and actioned by all in 3. By the time all of these ME wars finish UN will be placed into a regional league from the international one. That is why I am saying everyone is bypassing UN and doing what ever they want to do.

Why wouldn't they. The terrorist American government is an invading force, there for the purpose of stealing natural resources.

Just another army of head choppers in the NATO chain gang with US made weapons, Humvees, and Toyota Tacoma trucks. Seriously though, the Saudis do suck at fighting.

All this talk of Russia if and Russia dont! goodness me folks! some of you with carefully chosen words are jumping with joy in the possibility that Syria will be partitioned. Not one is explaining why it should be partitioned is it just you don't want Russia to prosper? Besides although Western moves are predictable they dont call the shots anymore starting September 30th. So yes a lot of rhetoric will fly and perhaps some conflict however needless to say a helluva lot is yet to play out. With nothing being certain at all! Do I think that some form of partitioning will eventuate, Yes. But not as most would think or like it to be. I can see a Kurdistan stretching into Turkey for sure. Other than that im not so sure and seriously doubt it.

Go ahead, send your minions to do your bidding since you clearly don't have the balls to do it yourself Carter.

Of course they won't say no .. that terrorist state is just under us control.

surferket, I trust that coalition to do what's best. Possibly the best military minds in the world are involved: Iran, Syria, Russia, Iraq, Hezbollah and other people who of cultures of tacticians and surviving against great odds.

And China is quietly involved. Anyone who thinks it's smart to "stir this pot" is not thinking clearly.
