The Yemeni Houthi rebels and the military forces loyal to them announced that they managed to down a reconnaissance aircraft of the Saudi-led coalition which fights against the militants, a military source told Sputnik on Thursday.

SANAA (Sputnik) According to the source, the plane was downed with a surface-to-air missile in the Saada province in northwestern Yemen.

Yemen has been engulfed in a military conflict between the government headed by Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and Houthi rebels, who have been supported by army units loyal to former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Since late March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition of Arab countries has been carrying out airstrikes against Houthi positions at Hadi's request.
