The UK prime minister told lawmakers that some hardline Islamists were fighting against Daesh in the ranks of the so-called moderate opposition.

LONDON (Sputnik) — Somewhat radical Islamists are fighting in the ranks of the so-called moderate opposition in Syria against Daesh (Islamic State), British Prime Minister David Cameron said.

"Some of them do belong to Islamist groups and some of them belong to relatively hardline Islamist groups but nonetheless that’s the best estimate of the people that we have potentially to work with," Cameron told lawmakers on the House of Commons Liaison committee on Tuesday.

The British prime minister added that there were not enough ground troops of the moderate opposition in Syria to counter the Daesh terrorists.

On December 2, after heated debates the UK government voted in support of extending its campaign against the Daesh group, which is outlawed in Russia and many other states, from Iraq to Syria as part of a US-led international coalition.
