CAIRO (Sputnik) — Egyptian soldiers eliminated five extremists during an air operation in the north of Sinai Peninsula, local media reported Sunday.

Another eight militants were injured and detained during the operation near the Egyptian town of Sheikh Zayed, the Masrawy news portal said.
The militant group was plotting to carry out a terror attack on a military checkpoint in northern Sinai, the media outlet added.
Egypt has been conducting anti-terrorist operations in North Sinai for the last two years, particularly against the the Wilayat Sinai (Sinai Province) militant group.
