MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Tehran will continue to support Damascus in its fight against terrorism, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Thursday.
"The Iranian government and nation will continue backing Syria’s nation and government in their confrontation with terrorist groups whose hands are stained with the blood of oppressed Syrians," Amir-Abdollahian said at a meeting with Grand Mufti of Syria Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun, as quoted by the Tasnim News Agency.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with troops loyal to Damascus fighting on multiple fronts against opposition factions and extremist groups. Iran, as well as Russia, make extensive efforts to support the government of the conflict-torn Syria in its anti-terror fight.
