MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Jordan has made headway in its task of listing the extremist groups operating in Syria, undertaken by the country as part of the Vienna peace talks, Jordan's envoy to the UN, Dina Kawar, told Sputnik Friday.

Jordan has been tasked with coordinating international efforts to compile a list of organizations fighting in Syria that should be designated as terrorist groups, in accordance with the Vienna settlement process and proposals made by its participants.

"Progress has been made in the task of compiling the list of terrorist organizations based on the Vienna communique, which Jordan is responsible for coordinating," Kawar said.

The final unified list is set to include a large variety of groups, Kawar said. The envoy also mentioned this week's Syrian opposition talks in Riyadh as another important aspect of the continuous settlement process.

"The difficulties [in the process] are well known to the sides involved," she added, referring in part to the issues faced in determining the status of the Islamist Ahrar al-Sham group. The group subsequently withdrew from the Riyadh talks.

The last Vienna-format meeting, held by international mediators on November 14, ended in a decision to convene the Syrian government and the opposition for peace talks by January 1, 2016, with a view to setting a six-month timeframe for Syria to form an interim unity government with an election to be held within 18 months. The ongoing Riyadh conference is set to form an opposition delegation to attend the January talks.
