MOSCOW (Sputnik) – "Due to information about an imminent security threat against the U.S. Consulate compound in Istanbul, U.S. Embassy Ankara advises all U.S. citizens to avoid U.S. Consulate General Istanbul, U.S. Embassy Ankara, U.S. Consulate Adana and the Izmir Consular Agency today, December 5, 2015," the Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) said in the statement.

US nationals are also asked "to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take the appropriate steps" to guarantee their personal safety.

OSAC was set up in 1985 to promote security cooperation between US private sector and the US State Department internationally.

On Tuesday, at least five people were injured when a pipe bomb exploded on an overpass near an Istanbul metro station, heightening security fears in the Turkish city.

Turkey has been on high alert since October 10, when twin suicide bomb blasts rocked the Turkish capital, claiming the lives of over 100.
