US, Russia Hold Discussions to Avoid Any S-400 Incidents

The United States and Russia hold talks every day "to deconflict, to create safe skies," according to Operation Inherent Resolve spokesperson Col. Steven Warren.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States and Russia hold talks daily on how to secure skies over Syria and to avoid using Russia’s S-400 against the US-led coalition members to counter the Islamic State, also known as Daesh, Operation Inherent Resolve spokesperson Col. Steven Warren told reporters on Wednesday.

“We talk with the Russians now every day as part of the working group that we have to deconflict, to create safe skies. And this certainly falls in the category of ensuring that the skies are safe for US and coalition aviators,” Warren said when asked what makes the Pentagon think that the S-400 will not impact the coalition's air campaign in Syria.

Moscow deployed S-400 missile systems at its airbase in Syria following the downing of a Russian Su-24 Fencer jet by a Turkish F-16 fighter on November 24.

Russia has been conducting airstrikes against ISIL radicals in Syria at the request of Syrian President Bashar Assad, while a US-led international coalition has been targeting ISIL positions in the country without the permission of Damascus or the United Nations.

The S-400 is a medium- and long-range air defense system, capable of neutralizing modern and advanced air and space attacks.
