BRUSSELS (Sputnik) NATO will make a statement soon on an incident involving a Russian military aircraft that was shot down over Syria on Tuesday, a source in the alliance told RIA Novosti.

Earlier in the day, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the Russian Su-24 Fencer bomber jet crashed in Syria "as most likely a result of a strike from the ground." The fate of the pilots, who according to initial information were able to catapult, remains to be determined.

The Defense Ministry stressed that the aircraft was strictly located within Syrian territory during its flight.
