The Russian military fired cruise missiles from ships in the Caspian Sea in the latest attack against the Islamic State on Tuesday, Operation Inherent Resolve spokesperson Col. Steve Warren said in briefing.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — However, Russia's General Staff said Wednesday that Russian strategic bombers had launched cruise missiles on ISIL targets.

On Tuesday, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced that the Russian Aerospace Forces doubled the number of sorties against Islamic State targets in Syria during the first day of a newly-planned air campaign that now involves strategic bombers.

“There were sea-based cruise missiles came out of the Caspian,” Warren stated on Wednesday when asked to confirm Russia’s sea-based strikes against the terrorist group.

The intensified air campaign followed an official confirmation that Russia’s Metrojet Airbus A321 passenger jet crashed over the Sinai Peninsula on October 31 as a result of a terrorist act.

The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the downing of the Russian airliner.
