TEL AVIV (Sputnik) — Since late September, a new wave of violence in a long-standing conflict emerged between Palestinians and Israelis amid reports that Israel would revise a status quo of the access to Temple Mount, which houses Islam’s third holiest site, the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Over a dozen of people from each side have been killed, mostly in sporadic attacks.
"After firing at the people, who were civilians, the perpetrator fled. We are currently searching for him," the source told RIA Novosti.
The attack occurred near the Jewish settlement of Otniel, south of the large Palestinian city of Hebron, located in the disputed West Bank, which has been at the center of the current outbreak of violence.
Palestinians seek recognition for their independent state on the territories of West Bank, as well as East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Srip.
The Israeli government denies Palestine's claims, refusing to diplomatically recognize the existence of a Palestinian state. Peace talks between the sides are consistently deadlocked.
