Dozens of Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli forces in the West Bank Wednesday, the anniversary of the death of their leader, Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian health ministry said.

One Palestinian was undergoing surgery after being shot in the heart during a clash in Al-Bireh, near Ramallah, AFP reported. More Palestinians were hit by live ammunition in the city of Tulkarem, north of Tel Aviv.

In total, "62 citizens were injured by live ammunition and rubber-coated bullets during clashes with the (Israeli) occupation in Tulkarem, Ramallah, Al-Bireh and Bethlehem," the Palestinian health ministry said, according to AFP.

The Israeli army, meanwhile, said its forces were responding to attacks.

"Rioters attacked forces and hurled Molotov cocktails and rocks at them. The forces then responded," including with live fire, the army said in a statement obtained by AFP.

Wednesday's protests came amid weeks of violence, including gun, knife and car attacks by Palestinians. The violence has resulted in the deaths of least 77 Palestinians – many of them alleged attackers – along with 10 Israelis.

Arafat was 75 when he died in 2004 at a military hospital after developing stomach pains.

Palestinian officials have accused Israel of poisoning the longtime leader, a claim which Israel has always denied.
