MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia is in favor of engaging all countries capable of contributing to the process of Syrian reconciliation in dialogue, including Iran, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday.
"Dialogue is underway. Of course, we support the expansion of this dialogue and the participation in this dialogue of all countries that can contribute to Syrian [conflict] settlement and the fight against terrorist, extremist organizations," Peskov told reporters, commenting on the upcoming Vienna talks, in which Iran is going to participate.
On Tuesday, US State Department spokesman John Kirby said it was likely that Iran would be invited for the first time to participate in multilateral talks on Syria.
Syria has been mired in a civil war since 2011. Syrian government forces are fighting against opposition factions and extremist groups, including radicals from the Islamic State jihadist group.
