An Iranian jet carrying more than 300 passengers made an emergency landing at a Tehran airport after part of one of its engines reportedly became dislodged and fell off during a flight.

The Boeing 747 passenger plane, which was en route to the coastal Iranian city of Bandar Abbas from Tehran, safely landed at an airport of the Iranian capital after part of its engine failed and then plummeted into Tehran's suburbs.

The 300 passengers which were on board the Mahan Air plane are all safe and sound now, media reports said.

Faramarz Sarvi, deputy head of the privately owned airline, explained that the pilots had decided to return to Tehran's Mehrabad Airport two minutes after takeoff when they detected the engine's failure.

"A piece of engine number three came off and hit the body of the plane," Sarvi was quoted by Iran's PressTV as saying.

He noted that the incident took place at about 7:15 a.m., and that all regular checks on the plane had allegedly been conducted ahead of the departure.

Sarvi added that all the passengers had already left for their destinations on other aircraft.
