Syrian Army Clears Valley Near Idlib of Nusra Militants
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Russian military operation in Syria will provide the Syrian Army with assistance necessary to free the northwestern province of Idlib from militants, the province's governor, Khaireddin al-Sayyed, said Saturday.

"We thank Russia for its support. Thanks to its help, the Syrian Army will be able to drive all terrorists out of Idlib and liberate it," al-Sayyed told Russian reporters.

The province is currently controlled by a number of militant groups, including the Nusra Front militants, a local offshoot of al-Qaeda terrorist group.

"All evil forces from around the world have gathered in our province. And they are not few. They are supported by countries such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and others. And only Russia's position is most honest and open," the governor added.

Idlib has been one of the focal points of violence in the four-year Syrian civil war.

Russian Aerospace Forces commenced precision airstrikes against terrorist targets in Syria on September 30, following a request from President Bashar Assad.
