The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) conducted an armed attack on a checkpoint in the Van province in eastern Turkey, according to the Turkish General Staff.

ANKARA (Sputnik) — Fourteen Turkish soldiers were wounded by militants from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the Van province in eastern Turkey, the Turkish General Staff said in a message, Wednesday.

The PKK, considered to be a terrorist organization by Ankara, was organized in 1984. The group seeks to create a Kurdish state in parts of Turkey and Iraq.

“On October 6 at 6:55 p.m. [GMT 15:55,] militants from the separatist organization [PKK] have conducted an armed attack on a checkpoint of the gendarmerie in Baskale town located in the Van province using a mined car and long-barreled weapons. After a car blast, the sides opened crossfire, which resulted in 14 slightly injured soldiers among our comrades-in-arms… Three militants were killed,” the message reads.

The Turkish armed forces launched simultaneous attacks on ISIL positions in northern Syria and Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) positions in northern Iraq and southeast Turkey in response to several terrorist acts during the summer.
