The US political elite should abandon their Cold War-era clichés and acknowledge that Russia has legitimate national security interests to protect in the Middle East, Leon Hadar, US journalist and analyst, wrote in his article for The American Conservative.

West Demonizes Russian Airstrikes in Syria to Justify Its Own Failure
"Many American policymakers have been programmed under the influence of the great ideological struggles of the 20th century, and view the international system as an arena where Good (the United States) fights Evil. So it is difficult for them to accept that the pursuit of US interests sometimes requires partnering with those who do not share our dreams and aspirations," he pointed out.

According to the author, Russia’s military campaign against the Islamic State (ISIL) terrorist group in Syria is fully legitimate.

He explained that the current chaos in the region could spill over in the form of growing radicalization of the Russia Muslim population. In addition, the ongoing turmoil creates the threat of a regional war which could affect both Russian interests and those of the US and major European nations.

Hadar added that unlike during the Cold War, relations between Moscow and traditional US allies in the Middle East – Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Israel – are now quite friendly.

"The idea that Russia will bring stability, peace and prosperity to Syria — and turn average Syrians into Russia’s best friends — runs contrary to the historic American and Soviet experience in the Middle East," the journalist assumed.

The Russian military operation in Syria amounts to a great win for Moscow and at the same time a big loss for Washington, he wrote. The Russian leader is very likely to succeed in the region unlike "the American misadventure in Iraq."
