Militants shelled old parts of the Syrian capital Damascus, the districts of Al Muhajirin, Bab al-Salam, Bab Tuma came under fire, according to a local police source.

DAMASCUS (Sputnik) — Militants shelled old parts of the Syrian capital Damascus, including the Christian neighborhood of Bab Tuma, leaving several civilians injured, a local police source said Tuesday.

"Militants’ fire came from Jobar. The districts of Al Muhajirin, Bab al-Salam, Bab Tuma came under fire. There are victims. There is no information about the killed so far," the source told RIA Novosti.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since March 2011. Government forces have been clashing with "moderate" opposition factions and extremist groups, such as Islamic State and the Nursa Front.

According to the UN, an armed conflict has claimed lives of over 250,000 people and displaced many millions.
