MOSCOW (Sputnik) Some 56 percent of the French citizens are in favour of sending the country's troops to participate in the fight against Islamic State (ISIL) jihadists in Syria, an Ifop poll for Le Journal du Dimanche newspaper revealed on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the opinions of those polled were divided on whether only the international military intervention can solve the ongoing Syrian conflict, with 48 percent considering the military action as the sole crisis-resolution method and 50 percent doubting the means, according to the survey.

France currently only participates in airstrikes in Iraq and supplies arms to the so-called moderate opposition in Syria.

On Monday, French President Francois Hollande ruled out the prospect of sending ground forces to the Arab Republic, qualifying such possibility as "unrealistic and illogical."

The following day, France launched inspection flights over Syria before initiating targeted airstrikes against the IS extremist group.

The poll was carried out by telephone on Friday and Saturday among 1,005 individuals aged 18 and older.
