ANKARA (Sputnik) — The Turkish military has detained a British citizen in southern part of Turkey over his alleged attempt to illegally cross the border with Syria and join the Islamic State (ISIL) terrorist group, Kilis province administration said in a statement on Friday.
"Our military has detained a British citizen in Akcabaglar village. He tried to illegally enter Syria to join IS," the statement said.
Islamic State has seized vast areas in Syria and Iraq. An international coalition led by the United States has been launching airstrikes against the IS militants in both countries.
Thousands of foreign nationals, including Britons, use Turkey as a transit route to enter Syria and join terrorist groups, including IS.
