Two Turkish Police Officers Killed in PKK Grenade Attack
ANKARA (Sputnik) — Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Monday broke off his cross country national tour and held an urgent meeting of the country's Security Council due to a deadly attack by Kurdish militants, the NTV television channel reported.

On Sunday, at least 16 Turkish soldiers were killed in an attack on two military vehicles in Turkey's southeastern Hakkari Province. Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants claimed responsibility for the incident.

Following the attack, the Turkish Air Force launched a series of airstrikes against 12 PKK targets.

The security situation in Turkey deteriorated in July, following a spate of police killings in southeastern Turkey, for which the PKK claimed responsibility.

The PKK was founded in the late 1970s. The group is considered to be a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and NATO.
