The International Peace Bureau claims that the peace in Syria cannot be achieved unless the United States and its allies stop supporting and training the so-called moderate opposition.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The peace in Syria cannot be achieved unless the United States and its allies stop supporting and training the so-called moderate opposition, the co-president of the International Peace Bureau (IPB) told Sputnik on Friday.

"If you really want a peace in Syria you need to stop sending weapons to Syria and stop to support different opposition groups; stop the Saudi Arabia and Turkey from sending weapons to the rebels and you have to start serious negotiation about ceasefire," Reiner Braun, who is also a member of International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms, said.

Syria has been in the state of a civil war since a 2011 political collapse. Government forces have been fighting on multiple fronts against opposition forces and numerous extremist militant groups, including the Islamic State and the Nusra Front.

The United States, as well as its allies, have been training and equipping moderate opposition in Turkey.

A US-led coalition, including Turkey and Saudi Arabia, has also been launching airstrikes against the Islamic State positions in Syria without a formal approval from Damascus.
