The Islamic State militants used chemical materials in their attacks on a town in northern Syria on Saturday, local media reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the SANA news agency, citing the sources from the town of Mare’a, several locals suffered from asphyxiation after the extremists attacked the region with shells containing toxic material.

Islamic State is a violent extremist group that has seized large areas in Iraq and Syria, establishing a caliphate on territories under their control.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that a field test carried out by the US military on fragments of mortar fired at Kurdish military forces in the northern Iraqi city of Makhmour had traces of sulfur mustard-gas agent.
