Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday quit the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Al Arabiya News Channel reported.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the media, he left the office along with six other high-ranking officials of the PLO, but he retained the position as Palestinian president.

New Palestinian Government to Be Formed Next Week

Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli media reported about possible resignation, saying that it would reflect growing factionalism in the politics of the Palestinian autonomy and the dissatisfaction by Abbas’s policy. They said that Abbas could be replaced by Palestinian politician and negotiator Saeb Erekat.

On June 17, Abbas accepted Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah’s resignation and announced plans to dissolve the government. Later, the Executive Committee of the PLO decided to create a commission with all Palestinian fractions to hold consultations on the issue of the formation of a unity government.
