MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Cairo Criminal Court has issued a preliminary death sentence to 10 people for running an al-Qaeda affiliated terrorist organization, the Egyptian daily Al-Ahram reported Monday.
Another 58 defendants in the terrorism case, including brother of al-Qaeda leader Muhammad Zawahiri, did not receive sentences on Monday. The trial of Zawahiri and his supporters was postponed until December 27.
In August 2013, Zawahiri and his followers were arrested after a large-scale government crackdown on ex-President Mohamed Morsi's supporters.
Following a string of mass protests in July 2013, the Egyptian military ousted President Mohammed Morsi and declared the Muslim Brotherhood movement, led by him, illegal.
