GENEVA (Sputnik) — Almost 1,900 civilians have been killed in Yemen since the escalation of the conflict between the Houthi opposition group and government forces in March, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said Tuesday.
On March 26, a Saudi-led coalition began carrying out airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen at the request of Yemeni President-in-exile Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.
OHCHR spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani told reporters in Geneva that since March 27, 1,895 civilians have been killed and 4,182 injured.
Yemen has been in a civil war since 2014, when Houthi militants, the country’s primary opposition party, took control over large parts of the country. Houthis took over the nation’s capital of Sanaa, forcing Hadi to flee to Saudi Arabia.
