MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The first UN ship in four months arrived in the port of southern Yemeni city with 3,300 tons of humanitarian aid, the World Food Programme reported Tuesday.

On Friday, the exiled Yemeni government declared Aden, the second largest city in the country, liberated from Houthi militants.

Fighting between the army loyal to Yemeni President-in-exile Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi and the Houthi opposition group intensified in 2014.

Earlier, Yemeni Transport Minister Badr Mubarak Ba-Salma urged international organizations to provide Aden's citizens with aid and said three ports in the city were ready to receive cargo, while the airport services have been restored by a technical team from the United Arab Emirates.

A Saudi-led coalition of Arab states has been launching airstrikes to counter Houthis in Yemen since March.

According to the latest UN data, over 1,600 civilians have been killed, and 3,800 wounded following an escalation in the Yemeni conflict, while 21 million people are in need of aid.
