The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) launched an airstrike on the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip after a rocket launched from the region had exploded on Israeli territory, an IDF spokesman said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip landed in an open area in Israeli territory near the southern city of Ashkelon late Wednesday night. There were no injuries or damage.

“The rocket struck near Ashkelon, no injuries were reported. In response #IDF targeted #Gaza terror infrastructure,” IDF spokesman Peter Lerner stated on his official Twitter page.

The conflict between Israel and Palestine began in 1967 when Israel occupied what had been the Palestinian Gaza Strip. Israel has been building settlements in the occupied territories, disregarding the objections from the United Nations.

The Gaza Strip is currently ruled by Palestine’s Hamas Islamist movement. Despite a ceasefire proclaimed last year following an Israeli military operation against Palestinian militants, rockets have been launched from Gaza into Israeli territory in recent weeks. The Hamas group has taken responsibility for several of the previous rocket attacks on Israel.
