MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip landed in an open area in Israeli territory near the southern city of Ashkelon late Wednesday night. There were no injuries or damage.
“The rocket struck near Ashkelon, no injuries were reported. In response #IDF targeted #Gaza terror infrastructure,” IDF spokesman Peter Lerner stated on his official Twitter page.
The Gaza Strip is currently ruled by Palestine’s Hamas Islamist movement. Despite a ceasefire proclaimed last year following an Israeli military operation against Palestinian militants, rockets have been launched from Gaza into Israeli territory in recent weeks. The Hamas group has taken responsibility for several of the previous rocket attacks on Israel.
