“We need to cooperate with our neighbors. Either side want peace, but do not trust each other,” Alla Shainskaya said on the sidelines of a UN International Meeting in Support of Israeli-Palestinian Peace.
She explained that left-wing political parties in Israel are more willing to negotiate with the Palestinians, but acknowledged that that side of the political specter was quite weak in the country.
According to the politician, in order to improve the popularity of the left-wing parties, "people’s fear [regarding Palestinians] should be killed.”
Palestinians seek the recognition of their independent state on territories partially occupied by Israel after the 1967 Six-Day War, including the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Israel has been building settlements in the occupied territories, despite objections from the United Nations.
Several attempts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have failed, with the most recent 2014 round of peace talks, mediated by the United States, gleaning no tangible results.
