UN Rules Out Afghanistan’s Return to Instability After Fresh Taliban Attack
04:44 GMT 23.06.2015 (Updated: 20:09 GMT 19.10.2022) The UN Security Council has condemned Taliban’s Monday attack on the Afghan parliament in Kabul, saying no amount of violence could reverse the country’s path toward peace and stability, according to a UN statement.
UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The UN "condemned in the strongest terms" the attack that ended with the six gunmen killed, and expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the victims.
"The members of the Security Council reiterated that no violent or terrorist acts can reverse the path towards Afghan-led peace, democracy and stability in Afghanistan," the organization declared.
A woman and a child were reportedly killed and dozens more wounded, but Afghan officials said no member of the parliament was hurt.
The attack on parliament came as Taliban captured the northern province of Kanduz early on Monday, according to media reports.
The Taliban was formed in the 1990s. It seeks to establish a Sharia-law governed emirate in Afghanistan. The group has carried out numerous deadly attacks in the country.
