Bombings in Baghdad Kill at Least Ten People

Subscribe
At least ten people have been killed by a pair of car bombs detonated outside of two five-star luxury hotels in Baghdad often frequented by Westerners, according to police.

The blasts in the parking lots of the Cristal Grand Ishtar and the Babylon Warwick struck about seven minutes apart, near midnight, and injured more than 30 people.

A decade-old nighttime curfew in Baghdad was lifted by Iraqi government authorities in February, even as the battle that pitted security forces against the Islamic State militants heated up.

Since the lifting of the curfew to restore a sense of normalcy to the city, the incidence of bombings increased in the city.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for these bombings, but Islamic State bombings have become increasingly frequent since the overran large parts of the country starting last year.

On May 17, IS seized the city of Ramadi, which lies about 70 miles west of Baghdad. The fall of the city has been seen as the biggest tactical loss since a US-led coalition began airstrikes against the IS militants last August.
