The Islamic State shot dead at least 20 people in the seized Syrian city of Palmyra's Roman-era amphitheater, a Syrian human rights watchdog said Wednesday, citing unnamed local sources.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), the amphitheater killings bring the total number of those murdered by ISIL in the last 10 days to 237.

However, on Sunday, the Syrian state television reported that Islamic State fighters have killed at least 400 civilians in Palmyra since it had been seized.

“IS [Islamic State] gathered people in the place of execution and said that those people are ‘Rawafed and Nusayriyya (Shiite and Alawite) from the regime forces and allied militiamen’, then IS militants shoot them [dead].”
