“There is a vacuum caused by the UN inaction. If the UN fails to take the initiative, then the power of the opposition will continue to dissipate and talks in various capitals will never be over.”
“The UN reputation is at stake now. The UN describes the Syrian crisis is the second biggest humanitarian catastrophe after WWII. At the same time, if the UN fails to take concrete steps concerning the settlement, it would mean that the UN fails to fulfill its functions.”
With a greater possibility of a US-Russian consensus on the Syrian problem, the chance of reconciliation in Syria has also increased following the recent visit of John Kerry to Russia, Qadri Jamil said.
“After the recent meeting of the Russian leadership with [US Secretary of State John] Kerry, a possible Russian-US consensus on the Syrian problem has started taking shape,” he said.
“If these two sides manage to come to an agreement, a solution to the Syrian crisis will be found.”
The four-year crisis in Syria was one of the key issues raised during Kerry's trip to the Russian resort city of Sochi last week.
The US top diplomat told reporters after a closed-doors meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov that Washington considered its dialogue with Moscow on the issue to be of utmost importance. He said both sides had agreed to continue negotiations on the resolution of the Syrian conflict in the next few weeks.
