At least 725 militants were killed in an Egyptian military anti-terror campaign in North Sinai in the last six months, local media reported citing the army spokesperson.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Mohamed Samir, almost 1,900 suspected Islamist militants were arrested from October 25, 2014, until April 30, 2015. Over 200 suspects were apprehended, according to Samir.

The Egyptian army also destroyed almost 2,000 militants' hideouts, and confiscated numerous vehicles.

Cairo has been carrying out operations against the militants based on the Sinai Peninsula since August 2012.

The region saw an increase in attacks on government forces since the overthrow of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
