MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Syrian security forces regained control over a checkpoint on the Syrian-Jordanian border seized earlier by al-Nusra jihadist group, a military source told Sputnik on Sunday.

“The Syrian army shelled al-Nusra’s positions near the Nassib checkpoint on the border with Jordan. A lot of terrorists were killed and wounded,” the source said.

He added that after the shelling commanders of al-Nusra and its allied terrorist groups retreated.

Earlier this week, Jordan closed the border with Syria when al-Nusra militants took control of the Nassib checkpoint.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, about 10 Lebanese truck drivers were kidnapped by al-Nusra in Nassib on Friday. Some 30 trucks have been trapped on the border.

In 2011, a civil war between pro-government forces and various militias, including al-Nusra Front, broke out in Syria. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, almost 4 million Syrians fled the country since the beginning of the civil war.
