Turkey’s Erdogan Calls for Shift to Presidential Democracy
ANKARA (Sputnik) — Turkey needs transition to the presidential government, Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Saturday.

“Presidential government would be right for Turkey. Today, the government system is not parliamentarian, and not even semi-presidential,” Davutoglu said as quoted by Haberturk television channel.

Davutoglu claimed that he and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan share similar views toward the need to change government system to the presidential one.

Is Turkey Turning Towards A Full Eurasian Pivot?
“Evolution toward the presidential system is very important, this is why under my initiative, this point has been included in the election campaign of the Justice and Development Party,” Davutoglu said.

The ruling Justice and Development Party has insufficient rights in the current parliament to introduce constitutional changes, which require two thirds of the votes in support. Opposition parties are against the presidential government system, blaming Erdogan for seeking authoritarianism. The next parliamentary election in Turkey is scheduled for June 7.
