MOSCOW (Sputnik) Lebanon will request the international community to provide the country with over $2 billion at the international donors' conference to help resolve the refugee crisis caused by the influx of Syrians, the Lebanese Social Affairs Minister said Thursday.

Almost 4 million people have fled Syria since a civil war broke out in the country in 2011. Most of the refugees settled in neighboring countries, including Lebanon.

According to a UN Refugee Agency report released in February, more than one million Syrians are registered in Lebanon. Lebanon's own population is about 4 million.

"Lebanon will ask the conference for $2.1 billion to address the refugees' needs over the course of two years, provided that the financial aid comes directly to Lebanon and not to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)," Minister Rashid Derbas told Al-Liwaa newspaper.

In January, Beirut imposed visa restrictions on Syrians entering Lebanon in an attempt to fight the refugee crisis.

The Third International Humanitarian Pledging Conference for Syria will be held in Kuwait at the end of March. Prime Minister Tammam Salam will head the Lebanese delegation, accompanied by Derbas.
