Kuwait decided to reopen its diplomatic mission in Yemen, choosing the port city of Aden instead of the capital Sanaa in a display of support for the legitimate government in the country.

"This is part of the country's support to legitimacy in Yemen, represented by President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, and goes in line with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Initiative," Kuwaiti KUNA news agency quoted a source in the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying. GCC initiative sought to transfer power in Yemen in a bid to resolve a major political crisis in the country in 2011.

Kuwait closed its embassy in Yemen after Houthi militants seized power in the country. The Houthis placed Hadi under house arrest, forcing the president to resign. Hadi, seen by many as Yemen’s legitimate leader, fled to Aden a week ago.

Aden was the capital city of South Yemen until uniting with the Yemen Arab Republic in 1990.
