CAIRO (Sputnik) — Non-permanent UN Security Council member Jordan will on Wednesday submit a draft resolution to the Council on lifting the embargo on arms supplies to the Libyan government, a spokesman for Egypt’s foreign ministry said.
Later on Wednesday, the UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting on the situation in Libya, which has recently seen an upsurge of violence as the Islamic State jihadist group has made a major advance in the country. Last week, the group's Libyan branch published footage showing the beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians.
Earlier in the day, the permanent representatives to the Arab League held an emergency meeting as well, calling on the United Nations to lift the arms embargo on Libya.
The embargo was imposed in 2011 over violence against civilians during protests against Libya’s long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi.
