ISIL Achieves Military Success, Takes Over Iraq City

ISIL fighters gained control over the city of Al-Baghdadi in western province of Anbar in Iraq.

Militants from the Islamic State terrorist group managed to take over the city of Al-Baghdadi, one of the few cities in Anbar province, not under the control of radical Islamists. The information was confirmed by the US Department of Defense.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said in Washington that it was the first time in two months when jihadists have taken control of a certain territory. However, he added that the loss of Al-Baghdadi is not a serious setback and the rebel group is currently holding a defensive position.

The Islamist rebel group also attacked the Al Asad Airbase, where Iraqi security forces are being trained by US combatants. The attack was reportedly repelled and all the attackers were killed.

On Thursday, the UN Security Council adopted a Russian-drafted resolution, designed to stop funding of the Islamic State. The document prohibits trade with antiquities from Syria and provides for economic sanctions against countries buying oil from Islamic State and al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front.

The resolution was adopted unanimously and is legally binding.
