MOSCOW, (Sputnik) — One person was killed and two wounded Tuesday when a homemade bomb went off in Egypt's second largest city of Alexandria, local al-Youm news website cited regional security sources as saying.

The explosion took place in the suburbs of Alexandria, in northern Egypt, and was apparently targeting security forces as a police car was passing by. The injured, a local meat vendor and his son, were taken to a hospital for treatment.

Security had been tightened in Cairo earlier in the day after police reportedly discovered two makeshift bombs at Cairo International Airport. There were no disruptions in flight schedules and the airport is functioning normally.

In a similar incident exactly a week ago, a bomb explosion killed one and injured two close to a police station in Alexandria. All three victims were reportedly members of the Islamist movement Muslim Brotherhood.
